Exploring Sustainability: An Inspiring Conversation with Lillie Beringer Crock

Jan 06, 2025

In the latest episode of Crop Talks and Field Walks, Kayla Bergman, the Sustainability Lead at Innovative Ag Services, sits down with Lillie Beringer-Crock, the 2024 Iowa Women Conservationist of the Year. This insightful discussion explores Lillie's journey as a third-generation beef farmer from Cascade, Iowa, and her transformative approach to sustainable farming.

Lillie shares the story of her family's farming legacy and the bold changes she's implemented since returning to the farm. Shifting from traditional tillage to no-till farming with cover crops, she highlights how these practices have not only improved soil health on their sandy terrain but also contributed to healthier livestock and higher yields. In a proud moment, Lillie recalls her father praising the farm’s crops as the best he’s seen in 55 years.
The conversation also delves into Lillie's partnership with Innovative Ag Services and the Truterra program, which has provided financial and technical support for her conservation efforts. Starting small with 20 acres, she gradually expanded to 240 acres, showcasing the power of incremental change and perseverance in adopting sustainable practices.

Lillie's advice to other growers? Build a team that shares your vision, start with manageable goals, and be prepared to learn from both successes and failures.
